nhexed 2.00.01 (alpha) available for download

Only a few days ago I mentioned my work on nHex-Ed, the rewritten hex-editor.
I managed to get the code in a reasonable state this weekend and it is now available for download from its new homepage.
Feel free to take a look, compile it using the normal configure / make / make install sequence and tell [...]

Hex-Ed revisited

HN_Hex-Ed
I wrote about my little Hex Editor before, but somehow this subject still comes back… It is still being downloaded several times a day (more than 2.000 downloads only this year!).
Evolution
Although I haven’t done any programming in Windows for years, and Hex-Ed has received it’s last update in 2004, I still receive requests once in [...]

LibreOffice Language Packs

LibreOffice
So you installed one of the beta versions of LibreOffice and it seems to work fine. But you had OpenOffice.org running in your local language and can’t get used to “File”, “Tools”, etc. menus and want them back in your own language you got used to after all these years.
Language Packs
The Document Foundation does not [...]

Changing the boot logo in Slackware

Is it possible to change the boot logo in Slackware?
This is a question that pops up once in a while on IRC and the forums, and the answer is yes, but there are some little details to take care of.
I made a step-by-step how-to once for myself, so I thought I might as well put [...]

Today DVDAuthor 0.7.0 was released.

The updated SlackBuild has been submitted to SlackBuilds.org and the pre-built packages are available on my [...]

Fixing problems with Linux systems is something I like. I’ve been in the support business for most of my professional life, and solving a difficult problem still gives me that satisfaction
The system
Recently I upgraded a system that was still running Slackware 13.0. It’s a not-so-new system, but should be good enough to serve [...]

LibreOffice 3.3.0_beta2 packages available for Slackware

The Document Foundation released a binary tarball of the second beta version of LibreOffice 3.3.0
Packages for both the 32- and 64-bits versions are available on my site. Remember that it is still a beta release and is not recommended for production.

NVIDIA “Failed to allocate primary buffer” error

Yesterday I installed Slackware on a computer that came with a Debian-derivative installed. Nothing against Debian, but I’m more used to Slackware, and the hard drive had enough space left…
This box is an all “no-brand / low-price” system, but has very reasonable specs: Quad-core AMD GHz processor, 4GB memory, 400GB hard drive, NVIDIA 6150SE nForce [...]

Barnyard2 – Solving the “Unknown record type” errors

When experimenting with the new Snort version 2.9.0 I ran into some problems with Barnyard2. It would simply crash with errors like:
ERROR: Unknown record type read: 104
Fatal Error, Quitting..
I started looking for information on the internet (Google is our friend…), and found out that at least I was not alone
Similar problems
Basically, I found [...]
