LibreOffice on Slackware
The day before yesterday was an exciting day for users of OpenOffice.org, as it was the day The Document Foundation announced the birth of LibreOffice.
LibreOffice is a productivity suite that is compatible with other major office suites, and available on a variety of platforms. It is free software and therefore free to download, use and distribute.
As I “twitted“:
OpenOffice is dead – Long live LibreOffice!
LibreOffice is completely based on the last OpenOffice.org version, but with the Go-OO improvements included. It’s still officially in “Beta1″ status, but it is a working product.
The main issues at the moment are:
- Only en_US versions available for now, localizations will follow
- No spell-checking at the moment (because of a problem with extensions)
- It cannot co-exist with OpenOffice.org for now (*)
I used the original OpenOffice.org SlackBuilds (with permission from the author) and adapted them for LibreOffice.
If you can’t wait to test this new suite, you can download the pre-built packages from my site, for both 32 and 64-bits Slackware.
(*) I’m trying out some solutions here…
